Ladies, are you looking for some frugal ways to practice self-care after a long day? Moms are huge multitaskers and often times they put their needs on the backburner. Self-care hasn’t been my priority and I tend to put everyone else’s needs before my own. Neglecting yourself isn’t healthy and can leave you feeling taxed at the end of the day. When you are exhausted and not taking care of yourself, your relationships can begin to suffer.

13 Simple Ways to Practice Self-Care on a Tight Budget

I want to make it very clear that self-care isn’t selfish or a waste of time. When we are refreshed, you are actually more productive and recharged. I have found that when I am not taking care of myself that I often look for ways to avoid things that I normally enjoy, including caring for my family. Self-care doesn’t have to cost a ton of money and chances are you already have a few of these products in your home.

DIY Manicure/Pedicure

I love going to the spa occasionally for a bit of pampering; however, I am not happy that I picked up fungus on my toenails. It is unsightly to look at and makes me cringe every time I put on sandals. Skip the chance at picking up fungus or even an infection from the spa and do it yourself.

Grab your favorite color of nail polish. SinfulColors is my go to brand because they have a large selection of colors to choose from and it isn’t outrageously expensive.

SinfulColors is adding a new collection of 12 fun colors that were inspired by Kandee Johnson. I received a free sample of this new line from Influenster. The color of polish in the photo is called Cherry on Top. It is perfect for spring and I love the pretty matte finish. Please excuse my sloppy nails, I have difficulty painting my own nails.

Journaling

Do you remember how writing down your most intimate thoughts down in a journal felt? Growing up I had a diary and was terrible at keeping up with it on a regular basis. However, writing down my thoughts and feelings despite how crazy they might have been was almost instant relief for the soul. Bottling up those thoughts and feelings can be taxing. Plus, it will help you reflect on the things that are bothering you. Don’t forget to share a few things that you are grateful for as well! It will help keep your entries in your journal balanced so that it isn’t filled with only negative thoughts and feelings.

Tackle an Item on your To-Do List

I am not a huge list maker but there are things that I tend to put off until the last possible second. However, doing so only tends to add more stress, which is known to contribute to increased belly fat. Plus, it always feels good to cross that nagging item off your to-do list.

Take a Walk

Walking is a great way to clear your mind and enjoy a few moments to yourself. Next time you need a breather, lace up your tennis shoes and talk a walk or two around the block. It is great exercise too and helps get your body moving. Exercising for 30 minutes a day can improve your overall health and leave you feeling more energized.

Meditate

Mediation is the art of turning negative thoughts into positive energy. Take as little as 10 minutes a day to help regain your focus. I personally haven’t used this technique but it is widely used self-care technique. It is often combined with Yoga too.

Treat Yourself to a Hair Appointment

I have put off getting my hair trimmed for the last several weeks, mostly due to dealing with severe technique. As I was writing this post, I was envisioning the hair stylist massaging my scalp while she was washing my hair. I usually go to the cheap places and wash my hair before I go so that I don’t have to pay for additional services. However, I will occasionally splurge and enjoy the mini scalp massage.

Read a Book

It has been a long time since I took the time out of my weekend to spend some time reading. I got to finish a book that I started several months ago. Reading is relaxing to me especially if I get caught up in the story. Even if you can’t read an entire book at a time, you can take time out of your busy day and enjoy reading a chapter before bed. Or you can even grab an audiobook and listen to it on your way home from work too.

Enjoy a Bath Alone

It never fails that the moment that I step into the bathroom the kids are two steps behind me. Thankfully, it does get better when they are teenagers so moms you do have that too look forward too. 🙂 Grab your favorite bubble bath or Epsom salt and a glass of wine (if desired). Then enjoy soaking in a nice hot bath. Don’t forget to slather Vaseline Petroleum Jelly on the bottom of your feet after you get out! The Vaseline will soften your feet and they will thank you for the extra TLC.

Binge Watch your Favorite Television Show

I haven’t been a huge fan of watching television; however, there are times that I enjoy just laying in bed and chilling while catching up on my favorite television show.

Have Sex with your Spouse

Unplug and enjoy spending some quality time with your spouse. I know you are wondering what I am thinking about but please hear me out. We are made to rely on each other and it is important to nurture the relationship with your spouse. Intimacy is crucial to a healthy relationship and is an important part of caring for yourself too. On the upside, it is a great way to burn calories and release those “feel good hormones”.

Sit in Outside and Enjoy the Sunshine

Did you know that most adults don’t get enough Vitamin D? Last fall, I was struggling with fatigue and some previous bloodwork done for a health screening indicated that my iron levels were on the low side of normal. I scheduled an appointment to talk to my doctor about it those test results and my ongoing fatigue problems. She decided to run several different blood tests to check for things that can cause fatigue issues in addition to my rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain.

My test results reflected that my Vitamin D levels were low. My doctor said this is pretty normal since our busy lifestyles typically keep us indoors for long periods of time. She also told me that even getting 10 minutes of sunshine is beneficial. I try to go early to sit in the pickup line at school so that I can roll down the windows and veg in the sunshine. The warm rays feel amazing and getting some much-needed sunshine is a great pick me up for the mid-day slump too.

Find a Hobby

Hobbies are a fun and great way to relax at the end of the day. I realize that some hobbies cost a bit more than others but I am sure that you can find something that you enjoy that can fit into your frugal budget. One of my favorite hobbies is to pick up the map pencils or gel pens and a coloring book. In the past, I have crocheted but it has been a while since I have picked up my crochet needles.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is one of my new go-to ways to help relax and unwind at the end of the day. Essential oils and diffusers are fairly inexpensive. I love using my essential oil diffuser. It is small and it fits perfectly on my nightstand. I will often diffuse my essential oils just before bed. Depending on my mood, I will diffuse any of the following oils: lemon, eucalyptus, peppermint, or peaceful sleep (sleep blend).

You don’t have to choose the most expensive brands of essential oils unless you plan on using them on your skin or ingesting them. This is something that I haven’t really experimented with yet and don’t have enough information to share with you about it. I am slowly adding to my collection of essential oils. I love way they smell and they aren’t emitting harmful chemicals into the air.
