9 Benefits of Using MyFitnessPal App

MyFitnessPal is a free app that was created to help dieters and fitness enthusiasts to be able to track their progress online or via their smartphone. I found this app after I got my very first smartphone and was looking for an easy way to track my calories. I tried several other apps before I found it. The other apps that I tried, made it very difficult to track what I was eating because the food library was seriously lacking foods that I ate and enjoyed.

If you are having a hard time losing weight, try using an app to help log your daily food and fitness activities. An app is a great way to hold yourself accountable and it is eye opening at first to see how many calories that you are actually consuming. You can download this app for free from iTunes or Google play so that you can start getting these 9 benefits of using MyFitnessPal app.

Largest Food Database

As I already mentioned above, several of the other apps on the market several years ago was lacking in the food library especially when it came to eating out. After downloading MyFitnessPal, I was quickly amazed with the food selections and was able to find the amount of calories for just about anything that I ate. If there wasn’t a restaurant available, I was still able to find something comparable at another restaurant so that I could at least have an idea of the calories that I was consuming.

They even have a barcode scanner that makes adding foods quick and easy using the barcode scanner on your smartphone. Plus, if you tend to make the same thing frequently, you can even save your meals to your favorite list so that you can easily add it to your daily journal.

Set Goals to Help you Lose Weight

The app can help you set realistic goals based on your current weight and help you determine the amount of calories that you need in order to reach your goal weight. Remember when you are setting your goal weight that do your best to stick to losing 1-2lbs a week. Losing weight to quickly isn’t healthy. Once you set your goals, the app will automatically calculate how many calories that you should be eating each day to reach your long term goal. As you lose weight, you can even adjust your current weight to ensure that you aren’t overeating.

See your Daily/Weekly Nutrition Information

The app allows you to see your actual vs goal nutrition levels on a daily and weekly basis. Even though you cut your calories, if you aren’t eating a wide variety of healthy food then it may take longer to get to your goal weight or it can explain why you aren’t losing any weight. As you are planning your daily meals, make sure that you eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and protein.

Join the MyFitnessPal Community

I love that this app has a community of other dieters and exercise enthusiasts who are using the app too. Experts suggest that when you have an accountability or workout buddy, that you are more likely to stick to your long term goals. Browse the forums and see how many people that you can connect with who have the same type of goals that you do.

Track your Progress

The app allows you to easily track your overall progress. It uses a graph to show you your current progress. Plus, you can even see your one, two, or three month progress so that you can see how far you have come.

Set Log Reminders

If you have trouble logging your daily calories, you can see reminders to help you remember. This reminder option will help keep you from forgetting to log your food intake. If you are like me and have trouble remembering to log my daily meals/snacks, the reminder option will prevent you from skipping your logs. I know a time or two that there were a few times where I had to go back a day or two and try to remember what I ate or had to drink.

Connects to Other Apps and Devices

This app allows you to connect other apps and devices to help you achieve your fitness goals. Pick a few of the fitness programs and try them. Don’t forget to connect your Fitbit too!

 Track your Water Intake

If you struggle with getting enough water to drink, use this app to help encourage you to drink more water. Don’t forget to add it to your daily journal. Water has amazing benefits and helps keep your body hydrated.

Log your Daily Exercise Routine

This app allows you to log any and all types of exercise especially if you don’t have a fitbit or other activity tracker. The app allows you to log both cardio and strength training. Once you add in your exercise, it will update the number of calories that you need to eat. It is important to make sure that you are eating at least 1200 calories if you are female or 1800 if you are male. This ensure that you have enough fuel to get you though the day.

Don’t wait, download the app from iTunes or Google play today! If you don’t have a smartphone, you can use it online too. Start getting these 9 benefits of using MyFitnessPal app for free.

  1. I used to use this, but I stopped once I got a fitness tracker. I always liked this app, though. It was very helpful.

  2. I love MyFitnessPal!! Now if only I would use it consistently. LOL!! I love how it connects to my Garmin VivoFit and tracks everything!!

  3. My fitness pal has helped me so much! I really need to get into using it again. I love to eat though and I find that even the things I thought were healthy actually is loaded in hidden carbs or sugars I had no idea about until I scanned them to count the calories. Its nice to have that insight with My Fittness Pal.

  4. I have been using MyFitnessPal for years now. I have tried other similar apps but they don’t compare to MyFitnessPal. MFP is user-friendly and the app is not heavy and like you, I love that they have a huge food database. They even have Filipino food in their database – how convenient is that 🙂

  5. I’m more concerned with getting fit than with losing weight so in addition to cutting out sugar I’m seeing a personal trainer twice a week. My husband is the one who got me going to him, otherwise I never would have bothered – and I’m so glad I did.

    1. Carol I think it is awesome that you are using a personal trainer. Most trainers recommend that you keep a food diary or journal and this app would be a great way to log your food. However, you don’t have to use it to log your food but you could use it to log your workouts. Good luck!

  6. This sounds like an app I am going to have to try for sure. I love how it tracks everything including water intake and has reminders as well. Thanks for sharing.

  7. I have a friend who used this app. At first we were skeptical but when we started seeing results on her, we were convinced that MyFitnessPal really helped in reaching your goals. Thanks for sharing!

  11. I love the my fitness pal website. I’ve lost 6 lbs in 2 weeks and hope to keep it going. We’ve cut out a lot of sugar and carbs to get the weight off.

  12. There are apps for everything now! I hadn’t heard of this one, but it sounds great. Very cool that it has such a big database of food barcodes to scan.

  13. I love my fitness pal. I really love being able to keep track of what I do. If you haven’t tried it, it’s an amazing app to help you along your fitness journey.

  14. This app is pretty cool, I’ve used it for over a year. If anything it put what I was eating into perspective. I realized I wasn’t eating anywhere NEAR where I needed to be with healthy foods.

  15. I have the my fitness pal app and I just love it!!! Nice to know how many calories you are actually taking in each day

  16. I can attest to the fact that MyFitnessPal app is pretty effective but that’s only if you’re very serious. Back when I had my daughter 5 years ago I used it and I was very focused and was able to lose weight and maintain it. I tried picking back up a few times since but haven’t been as focused.

  17. Keeping accountability is one of the biggest things for a successful fitness program. The numbers don’t lie (assuming you aren’t lying to yourself when entering info into the app.)
