The best food choice for eye health is fish, especially the kinds that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon. Aside from being great for your heart, omega-3 fatty acids can help keep the retina in the back of your eye healthy. What is more, they also help in preventing dry eyes. When out there buying salmon, always choose a wild-caught one because farm-grown ones have more saturated fat.
If it’s green and leafy, it’s likely that it’s great for your eyes. Spinach, lettuce, basil, and kale are incredibly healthy and filled with antioxidants. Spinach stands out in particular because it contains rather high amounts of lutein which is good for preventing cell damage. Since cells and muscles in the eye are incredibly fragile and sensitive, they can be damaged rather easily. That’s where lutein steps in – it makes the muscles in your eyes stronger and helps keep infections at bay.
Bright red and refreshing, tomatoes are packed with vitamin C as well as carotenoids, including lycopene. Bright lights can cause damage to the retina of the eye, but when your ocular tissues have lycopene, the same light-induced damage is reduced. While it seems like the easiest way to get tomatoes into our systems is to eat loads of ketchup, it’s fresh tomatoes that have the most nutrients and vitamins rather that processed tomato products. Eat your tomatoes fresh, with a bit of virgin olive oil, some sea salt, and fresh basil and your body will absorb lycopene better.
People tend to avoid eating a lot of eggs because they fear for their cholesterol levels. Eating one egg a day will not have a negative impact on your cholesterol levels, but it will have a great effect on your eyesight.
