Last Thursday evening, we decided to unplug for a few hours so that we could spend time together as a family without the distractions. With summer time coming to a screeching halt in two weeks, we want to make the most of our freedom from time sensitive schedules and running errands. Over the summer, we have enjoyed spending time at the swimming pool. Swimming is great exercise, and it is something that the entire family can enjoy.
Going out to the pool kept me active, and it forced me to get out of the house. During the summer time, I can easily become a hermit and not leave the house. Being a hermit isn’t healthy, and it isn’t good for the kids to be cooped up in the house all summer either.
During the summer, temperatures can quickly soar to over 100 degrees in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas metroplex. The swimming pool was the perfect place to cool down while enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. Here is our list of essentials items that we usually take to the pool.
This summer we have been known to eat lunch or dinner at the pool. Whether it be sandwiches, chicken, wraps, or Papa Johns gluten-free crust pizza. Last Thursday, we ordered pizza from Papa Johns. When losing weight, we don’t exclude certain food groups. Instead, we focus on moderation and do what we can to make it as healthy as possible.
When losing weight, we don’t exclude certain food groups. Instead, we focus on moderation and do what we can to make it as healthy as possible. Ordering online was a breeze, and we picked our pizza up about 20 minutes after I placed our order.
Once we got back home, we quickly got changed into our swimming gear and gathered up the rest of our essentials. Then we headed to the pool to eat our dinner. We sat down and enjoyed Papa Johns gluten-free ham and onion pizza. I haven’t ever ordered gluten-free crust, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The New gluten-free crust made with Ancient Grains was delicious, and it didn’t lack in flavor. It even had the same crunch that you come to expect with a thin, crispy pizza crust.
Before bringing food to the pool, do make sure that it is allowed. We have access to a community pool, and we are allowed to bring food into the pool area.
Weight loss tip: Order a pizza with meats that aren’t greasy like chicken or ham, reduce the amount of cheese, stay away from creamy sauces like alfredo or ranch, and stick to a thin, crispy crust or gluten-free crust.
Their gluten-free pizza crust is made using Ancient grains and fresh ingredients. Papa Johns doesn’t recommend ordering the gluten-free pizza crust if you have a gluten allergy. It is possible for the gluten-free crust to come in contact with gluten while they are prepping your pizza. Grab a small two-topping new gluten-free crust made with Ancient Grains for $9.99. Use the following coupon code when ordering: GLTN2T (coupon code is valid for a limited time only).
Even if we don’t plan on eating at the swimming pool, we always take plenty of drinks to the swimming pool. It is important to stay hydrated so that you don’t get dehydrated. Instead of, carrying our own drinks to the pool we often take a small cooler along with ice so that we can keep our drinks cold.
Weight loss tip: Drink water or flavored water to rehydrate while at the swimming pool.
Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before heading out to the swimming pool. It gives the sunscreen a chance to soak into your skin. Most people often forget to re-apply it after 60 to 90 minutes depending on the brand of sunscreen that you are using.
Pro tip: Set a timer to go off if you have trouble remembering when you first applied sunscreen.
Fun Pool Approved Toys
Opt to bring along the diving sticks, goggles, a small football or balls (if allowed), or other pool toys. Last Thursday night, we had a blast tossing the football back and forth to each other. Missing the football meant extra movement in the swimming pool.
While, this might seem obvious, but if you are in a hurry, it is possible to leave them at home on accident. Before heading out the door, we typically put our towel around our neck or in a tote bag. If we were heading to the water park or a public pool, I would opt to put all of the towels in a tote bag. Carrying our towels in a tote bag also gives us a place to put the keys to the car, cell phone, and a small amount of money.
We all wear our sandals to the swimming pool since it is a pain to put on socks and tennis shoes with semi-wet feet. Plus, sandals are also great to have near the pool in case the concrete is too hot. Just slide your sandals on and take them off near the swimming pool.
If you have little ones who can’t swim on their own, we highly suggest that you invest in a puddle jumper. It is an approved life vest that goes around your child’s chest and has floaties. Before we got one for my son, we always had to let him play in the shallow water where he could touch, or he had to hang on to us. Now he enjoys swimming all over the pool, and we don’t have to worry about him sinking to the bottom.
Tip: Even with a Puddle jumper or other flotation device it is important to keep an eye on your child. It is possible that they can still drown without being completely submerged in the water.
The swimming pool has been one of our favorite places to hang out this summer. Swimming is an excellent way to burn calories especially if you have mobility issues. It has been difficult for me to exercise since the beginning of the year when my rheumatoid arthritis symptoms caused my hips to hurt when I walked. The water helps take the pressure off my joints so that I can get some form of exercise. We will all be sad once the temperatures take a plunge and it is too cold outside to go swimming.
