Summer temperatures can easily hover around 100 degrees or more depending on the area you live in. In the DFW area, you can factor in humidity too. The summer heat mixed with humidity can make it feel even hotter outside. When heading outdoors, whether I am heading to the pool or trying to get in a short walk outside I always feel like I am melting until the sun goes down. Today, I thought I would share my favorite summer workout essentials.
A Good Deodorant/Antiperspirant
Degree deodorant has always been my go-to brand since it first came out. As a teen, I had physical education in the middle of the day so I needed a deodorant that would keep me dry and prevent me from smelling like an old dirty sock after PE. I’ve always loved that the deodorant was able to sense my body heat rising and started working harder to keep me dry.
Last week, I was at Walmart and noticed that Degree has come out with a new line of deodorant. I picked up two different scents of Degree UltraClear Black+White Dry Spray Deodorant (I’ve never found one that I don’t like and the record continues). I was eager to try it because it was made to prevent white marks on my dark clothing, even my little black dress, and it prevents those embarrassing ugly yellow sweat stains that can be found on lighter colored shirts.
Thursday evening, my husband and I went on a date night for our 10 year anniversary. I was happy to say that Degree deodorant was able to keep me protected while preventing white deodorant marks on my blue shirt. I’m happy that Degree is able to keep up with me whether I am going out on a date with my husband or exercising.
We went out to dinner to celebrate our ten year wedding anniversary. Degree deodorant has always been my go to brand. I remember purchasing Degree when I was a teenager. I was involved in sports and needed a deodorant that kept me dry in class and on the soccer field. When I was at Wal-Mart, I noticed Degree had a new line that prevents white marks on my clothes or ugly yellow sweat stains on my white t-shirts. I was so glad that I didn’t have to worry about white deodorant marks on my blue shirt. Deodorant marks on my shirt would have been super embarrassing too. Sunscreen is a huge priority when it comes to protecting my skin when I am outside. I use it when I plan on spending more than 10 to 15 minutes outside during the day.
Dehydration is a real possibility when it is hot outside and you have not had enough to drink throughout the day. We recommend drinking plenty of water before heading outside, take frequent water breaks while you are working out, and after you have completed your workout. When it is super hot and you are sweating profusely it is important to replace the lost fluids.
Tip: A good way to know that you’re hydrating properly is by checking the color of your urine. When your urine is paler, it is a sign that you are well hydrated.
Light and Breathable Exercise Gear
Unless I am in the swimming pool, you can find me in a shirt and shorts on a daily basis. Summer workouts essentials calls for light and breathable clothing while exercising outdoors. You don’t want to wear clothing that is going to trap sweat and cause you to overheat. Light colored clothing is best.
Before heading outside in the Texas heat, soak the cooling towel in water and wring it out. Simply snap the cooling towel to activate its instant cooling technology. Place the towel around your neck while you are exercising outside in the summer heat. If you don’t have a cooling towel, we highly recommend that you put this on your summer workout essentials.
Phone and Headphones
Listening to music is a must for me. Whether I hit the trail or walk on the treadmill, I will always have my phone and a pair of headphones so that I can listen to my favorite music while I workout.
I like to have a general idea of how many steps that I took when walking so that I can accurately estimate the number of calories that I burn. My phone currently has a step counter installed but my husband prefers to use a Fitbit attached to his shorts. A fitness tracker can help encourage you to get out of the house and increase your daily step count.

Exercising outside in the summer comes with several risks. Those risks include dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and even death. It is important that you recognize the symptoms so that you don’t jeopardize your health. Keeping a phone handy while you are out exercising is a wise idea because you can call for help if you start feeling like you are in trouble. That is part of the reason why I included my cell phone in my top summer workout essentials.
