Christmas time is one of my favorite times of the year but it is also a time when I often let down my guard when it comes to my eating habits. I have worked hard over the past several months to lose weight and now wouldn’t be a good time to regress to my old ways. Instead, of fixing my usual favorite desserts and Christmas dishes, I am opting for healthier alternatives. However, with all of the Christmas parties and holiday events coming up in the next several weeks, I wanted to share with you some tips to help make your holiday party planning a success if you are watching your weight. Use these 7 legitimate ways to survive a Christmas party without blowing your diet.

Reduce Your Calories
Here are a few ways to reduce the calories that you are eating. Try to skip the following foods:
- mayonnaise or mayonnaise-based sides
- cheese, cheese dip, cheese-based entrees/sides
- ranch dip
- cheese balls made with cream cheese
- bbq sauce is often filled with sugar
- Swedish meatballs
- heavy cream dishes
- creamed spinach or artichoke dip
- canned cranberry sauce is filled with sugar
- prime rib is the fattiest meat on the cow
- green bean casserole
- bread and stuffing
- sour cream
- loaded mashed or baked potatoes
- high-calorie desserts and drinks
Try to opt for low-fat meats such as chicken or pork whenever possible. It isn’t always easy to control the food choices if you aren’t hosting the Christmas party yourself. Use these hacks to try to make it as diet-friendly as possible.
If you know that you are going to Christmas party or holiday gathering, you can try to save up additional calories during the week to help account for the extra food or beverages that you plan on consuming. I normally am not a fan of rewarding yourself with food but in this case, it will allow you to relax and enjoy your party without feeling guilty later.
Choose Healthy Alternatives
It is hard to control what other people bring or serve at a Christmas party but you can opt to bring some healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables. Fill your plate with lean meats, raw vegetables, and healthy options. Instead of picking up chips and salsa, opt to bring a vegetable platter with a yogurt-based dip or hummus. Bring a Water Bottle with You
Don’t forget to carry a water bottle with you to the Christmas party. Drinking plenty of water will keep you from getting dehydrated. Plus, it will help keep you feeling full or can help ward off aimless snacking. Try to avoid adding soda to your cooler. Soda is packed full of sugar and empty calories.
Don’t Go Back for Seconds
It can easily be tempting to continuously snack for several hours when you attend Christmas party or gathering. Instead, opt to fill up your plate once and going back for seconds. This will help prevent you from overeating and ruining your week of healthy eating.
Exercise Before Your Planned Party
Try to head to the gym or get your workout finished before you head to your Christmas party or gathering. The extra calories that you burn can help keep your calorie intake in check. Plus, it working out will give you an energy boost too.
Limit the Alcohol
It is easy to be tempted to order a bunch of drinks while you are hanging out with your friends. But if you are drinking too many alcoholic beverages then you may be canceling out your entire week of healthy eating. Instead, opt for one or two drinks preferably alcoholic drinks that are low in sugar/carbs.
Skip the margarita or pina colada and choose a wine or light beer instead. Even better if you skip it all together. Plus, limiting your alcohol intake will also prevent you from accidentally overeating.
